Join us for a reading from the new anthology Nasty Women Poets: An Unapologetic Anthology of Subversive Verse (Lost Horse Press, 2017) as we hear from local contributors Kelli Russell Agodon, Jennifer Bullis, Susan J. Erickson, Susan Rich, Martha Silano, Judith Skillman, and Carolyne Wright.

«This timely collection of poems speaks not just to the current political climate and the man who is responsible for its title, but to the stereotypes and expectations women have faced dating back to Eve, and to the long history of women resisting those limitations. The nasty women poets included here talk back to the men who created those limitations, honor foremothers who offered models of resistance and survival, rewrite myths, celebrate their own sexuality and bodies, and the girlhoods they survived. They sing, swear, swagger, and celebrate, and stake claim to life and art on their own terms.»

Kelli Russell Agodon is the author of six books and is the cofounder of Two Sylvias Press where she works as an editor and book cover designer. Her most recent book, Hourglass Museum, was a Finalist for the Washington State Book Awards and shortlisted for the Julie Suk Poetry Prize; her second book, Letters from the Emily Dickinson Room, was chosen for the Foreword Book of the Year Prize for poetry. Kelli is also the Co-Director of Poets on the Coast, a yearly writing retreat for women that takes place in La Conner, Washington.

Jennifer Bullis, a finalist for the 2018 Brittingham & Pollak Prizes, is author of Impossible Lessons (MoonPath Press). Her poems and essays appear in Gulf Coast, Tinderbox, Water~Stone Review, Terrain.org, and Tahoma. She earned a Ph.D. in English at UC Davis and taught at Whatcom Community College for 14 years.

Susan J. Erickson: Emily Dickinson advised If your Nerve, deny you--/Go above your Nerve. Susan J. Erickson believes that women who live “above Nerve” qualify as Nasty Women. Her book, Lauren Bacall Shares a Limousine, features poems in the voices of a variety of women who lived above Nerve.

Susan Rich is the author of five books, most recently, Cloud Pharmacy (White Pine Press). She is the winner of the PEN USA Award for Poetry and the Times Literary Supplement Award, London. Her poems have been published in all 50 states including in such journals as the Antioch Review, Harvard Review, Michigan Quarterly Review and Poetry Ireland. Along with Kelli Agodon, she is cofounder of Poets on the Coast, a yearly writing retreat that takes place in La Conner, WA each September.

Martha Silano’s most recent books are Reckless Lovely (Saturnalia Books 2014), and a revised and expanded edition of her award-winning first collection, What the Truth Tastes Like (Two Sylvias Press 2015). She co-edited, with Kelli Russell Agodon,The Daily Poet: Day-By-Day Prompts For Your Writing. Poems have recently appeared or are forthcoming in POETRY, Beloit Poetry Journal, and New England Review. A forthcoming collection will appear from Saturnalia Books in 2019. Martha teaches at Bellevue College.

Judith Skillman’s recent book is Kafka’s Shadow (Deerbrook Editions). Her poems have appeared in Poetry, Shenandoah, Zyzzyva, FIELD, and elsewhere. Awards include an Eric Mathieu King Fund grant from the Academy of American Poets. A new collection, Premises of Light, is forthcoming from Tebot Bach.

Carolyne Wright’s ground-breaking anthology, Raising Lilly Ledbetter: Women Poets Occupy the Workspace (Lost Horse, 2015), received ten Pushcart Prize nominations and was a finalist in the Foreword Review’s Book of the Year Awards. Wright teaches for Richard Hugo House; for the Antioch University Los Angeles MFA Program; and for literary conferences and festivals in the U.S. and elsewhere.
